Cristina Gabriele is an experienced Communications Designer with a demonstrated history of working in the design industry. Operating a multidisciplinary design consultancy of her namesake, Cg Studio, Cristina practices as a design strategist, professor, copywriter, artist, and researcher. Engaged in designing for social impact, Cristina leverages and facilitates narrative building as a tool to transform and construct more equitable environments and sustainable futures. Cristina has, and continues to work in visual communication, art direction, identity systems, brand collateral, copywriting, strategy, positioning, and product design for Pratt Institute, Oscar de la Renta, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel Germany, CR Fashion Book, Frog Design, Invista and was a founding member of the Manufacture New York Pilot Program. Cristina is currently teaching Undergraduate Communications Design and Fine Arts, Design and Art History courses at Pratt Institute and Hofstra University as both a Visiting Assistant and Adjunct Professor, previously having taught at Queens College.

The Teachers Project was organised in Fall 2019. It serves as a space to investigate, interrogate and question design pedagogy and its practice. It is also a space to develop community and friendship. The project evolved out of with in-person workshops and discussions in Fall 2019, exploring prompts on instructor authority, tools, environments and gestures as power structures, expectation of power vs desire of power.

One aim of The Teachers Project is to offer a generous space while working through what it means to apply an emancipatory and radical pedagogy within the context of institutional structures.

Organised by Nida Abdullah as an extension of her work as a fellow for the Pratt Center for Teaching and Learning. This position has concluded though the work continues. This project is supported and funded by the Pratt UG Communications Design Program.

Women, Power, and Authority explores the embedded power and authority structures concerning women's rights and gender equality. As scholar and classicist, Mary Beard suggests, if we can identify the "principles of spoken authority," we can begin to refine our "visions of power, knowledge, and expertise." By investigating the way, we approach our cultural template (the way we see and operate in the world), we have the opportunity to reconceive the way we combat discrimination, inequality, lack of access and representation; all of which can invigorate and elevate our social, economic and corporeal standing. Each reference collectively creates a holistic framework to extend an inquiry to how women engage internal and institutional power and authority structures.

Dax-land, co-created by Cristina Gabriele and Matt Martin, seeks to construct a speculative typographic landscape as an investigation into the navigation of bias. As a theoretical inquiry, Dax-land theorises and curiously questions how individuals perceive, intuit, and interact with their inherent biases. Typography as a three-dimensional form provides context both into language and landscape; encouraging the viewer to navigate the language of their own bias spatially. Taking into consideration location, scale, positioning, distance, and the notion of travel, the user begins to practice traversing their prejudices through a series of active indices. Dax as terrain embodies bias surrounding shape and colour recognition; the notion of pure shapes and non-shapes. As we all actively contribute to systemic disparity, we have the responsibility to re-imagine and restructure our dialogues and environments to reflect a more equitable state..

The Pink Tablet is a satirical investigation into the notion of commodified feminism, more specifically into how inherently gender-neutral products are marketed to women. Pink Bic pens, gem-encrusted phone chargers, and breast enhancing cookies fill the pages of The Pink Tablet. A not so subtle reminder of the patriarchal forces that continue to subjugate women to maintain control. Designed to resemble a generic mailer, The Pink Tablet claims to sell a variety of "female-centric," products. Upon further inspection, the merchandise offsets three feminist interviews, "The Power of Intersectional Feminism in 1 Minute," by Kimberlé Crenshaw, "The Imperative of Intersectional Feminism," by Emilie Aries and a self-proclaimed "awkward" interview between Roxane Gay and Erica Jong, moderated by Anna Schachner. Each feminist work presents an offering, supporting the reader in the navigation of treacherous, commercial landscapes. Interspersed with expired makeup coupons, discount steak offers, and fuchsia weaponry, the publication devolves into a taxonomy of invasion, annihilation, and objectification.

Annual Yearbook 2018 investigates the deeply embedded and parasitic nature of sexual assault, abuse, and related infringements within US politics and government since the founding of the country. Designed to look like an official state document, Annual Yearbook 2018, mimics (yet disrupts) the internal visual language of the Senate in an attempt to infiltrate the institution. Convincing readers from a first glance that the document is valid, perhaps even celebratory (initial pages showcase several Senators standing proudly in front of the American flag), soon, the document devolves into a yearbook of US predation, instead of superlatives, each candidate is labelled with the nature of their assault and eventually consumed by their own organism. Aside from the overt commentary on the repulsive nature of the organisation at large, data towards the front and back of the annual reflects the evolution of infringement, lack of justice and implications for such gruesome, illegal, actions.

Pratt Institute Free School is an entirely free and open day of programming and workshops related to contemporary issues in design. Investigating the Institution, explores the nature of the establishment through a series of digital surveys. Each survey aims to support the participant in the navigation of the institution, particularly in investigating the environment (space) and language (visual and signage). Preliminary data collection aims to provide an introductory manual for individuals seeking clarity and guidance (while navigating similar institutions) and for the institutions themselves to gain insight into how they are being perceived and understood. Initial findings throughout institutions suggest that modifications (navigationally) both within the realms of environment and language are needed. However, more significantly, the implications of those potential explorations and evolutions allow for investigation and reflection into the notions of physical space and infrastructure in the context of personal realities ranging from language to culture and physical ability. Investigating the Institution integrates findings from 62 participants across five digital surveys reflecting the navigational realities of 5 predominant New York City-based art institutions: Cooper Hewitt, Guggenheim, Met Breuer, MoMA, and the New Museum. Concerned with further investigating institutional auditing, the research seeks to reveal the nature of power and authority dynamics concerning women and their navigation of rocky institutional terrains.

On Intersectionality is an interrogative zine broaching the subject of Intersectionality through the lens of Chindogu (Kenji Kawakami), a design methodology focusing on the universal nature of curious or strange tools. Intersectionality tenants from The Opportunity Agenda (a consolidated reflection of research and works in the context of defining Intersectionality) are remixed both visually, and linguistically with the "10 Tenets of Chindogu," which reflect the rules and nature of the intervening design form. Wikipedia excerpts have been tied into the dialogue to reflect the notion of multiple editors and the diverse nature and representation of the subject itself.

Mansplaining is a two-person card game designed to deconstruct, code, and reformat the language of mansplaining so it's identifiable. Mansplaining consists "of a man explaining something to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronising." Constructed by remixing elements from Kim Goodwins, "Mansplaining Chart," the game allows players to build dialogues funnelling into a total of four outcomes: "Not Mansplaining," "Probably Mansplaining," "Definitely Mansplaining," and "Just Stop Talking Now." Each time a player assembles a convincing hand that reveals one of the four outcomes, the participant gains a point. Two wild cards intersperse amongst the game. The first, "English Rose," a combined six-track of Fleetwood Mac's Mr. Wonderful, featuring their 1969 drag album cover, which signals to draw again. The second, a photograph of a woman's feet in the restroom indicating a rethink, communicates the drawing of two extra cards from the deck, overlaid on a set of vintage floral cards to represent and challenge notions of the homemaker. The coding structure, composed from a DYMO label maker and black embosser tape (demanding thoughtfulness in each letter), is juxtaposed with a series of 52 female lips rescued from various magazines as an assemblage ode to speech.

Daily Feminist is a technological design response to the system of Commodified / Marketplace Feminism. The notion operates by detaching and diluting the political and social origins of Feminist theory and methodology while appropriating and remixing its elements for commercial gain. @daily___feminst is an Instagram account , peacocking as a legitimate feminist merchandise outlet providing "Everyday products for the die-hard feminist." As an outlandish commentary on Marketplace Feminism, Daily Feminist seeks to provoke and inquire by raising conversations surrounding intersectionality and access.

Space Place is an interrogative, interactive zine that investigates and reimagines our relationship to space, supporting the user in the navigation of unfamiliar or inaccessible environments. Constructed to maneuver space through the five senses via collage making, Space Place provides directions, infrastructure, and prototypes to inspirit the reader. Each sense deconstructs into a sequence of descriptors, then matches with a sheet of physical cut-outs, providing the materials and foundations for decoupage investigations. As the toolkit is relatively abstract, sample collages reinforce creative inquiry while providing a frame of reference. Preliminary research regarding the prototyped toolkit's efficacy occurred at Bluestockings Bookstore, Cafe and Activist Center, in the Lower East Side. Four participants actively engaged with the material across a series of hours and were documented during the process.

The 5th Wave seeks to investigate cultural templates and infrastructural capacities surrounding women, power, and authority. Constructed collaboratively through an exchange of creative and technical skills with Clint Downing of Downing Frames, The 5th Wave implements research through design (RtD) methodologies, infiltrating a predominantly male framing environment to take shape. Additionally, conceived with a specific and ordered obstruction, the final product was a task to resemble Isamu Noguchi's artwork. More specifically, it must integrate seamlessly within the environment of The Noguchi Museum. Composed of both maple and ash symbolising strength, endurance, and the intersection of time, The 5th Wave illustrates the four (existing and historic) waves of Feminism while alluding to a future fifth, with its five ligneous crests. With its graduated colour palette, boundless form, and dynamic modality, viewers are encouraged to interact with and arrange the sculpture to interrogate or reflect their ideals surroundings through the subject matter. Fabricated with classical framing technologies, The 5th Wave takes on a symbolic dimension in which it directly addresses the concept of framing or lens-making through its form. Each segment, distinctly an unlocked or incomplete frame, suggests an open dialogue while equally establishing an opportunity to close off or define a space with its various parts. Cut across the grain and finished utilising multiple tools, materials, and procedures. Each crescent represents a historical or future wave of Feminism while embodying the notion of the template itself through its form. The manner and exchange in which the piece self constructs directly addresses institutional frameworks and dynamics, most notably exemplifying the notion of collaborative disruption. The 5th Wave has endured dye, shellac, sandpaper, and wax, all of which have left residues and distinct markings. Varnished to maintain its integrity, we are left to contemplate its beauty, perhaps one of its inescapable fates.

Sonic Scapes, a speculative investigation, seeks to promote auditory education and learning by exploring sound and sense-making by connecting Lower East Side public schools with local music venues and initiatives. Current findings suggest that students who engage musically (especially after two years of playing an instrument) perform better academically, which, in turn, can boost literacy, enhance the ability to hear speech in noise, and most importantly, allows for faster brain development. While the initiative looks to accrue and incorporate local musical partnerships, the program actively investigates, synthesises, and distributes musical resources. Prototyped as a musical installation at Pratt Institute, Sonic Scapes consisted of guitar and bass player Doug McKeever performing live (both instruments) amidst an animated backdrop to a venue of designer onlookers. As Doug played a series of nine songs on loop (explicitly scored to reflect the Lower East Side), spectators were encouraged to engage in a free music lesson with signage and a staged environment. Framed with a raw animation featuring local performances, venues, and musical resources, Sonic Scapes considers a utopian infrastructure in which better and consistent access to music invigorates and shapes local landscapes, markedly benefitting health, education, and social wellbeing.

Debuted at New York Fashion Week with Manufacture New York and Heatherette, the line was Cristina's first foray into fashion technology, blending laser-cutting techniques and industrial materials with hand sewing. Extrusion of the Cable Tie as an industrial object, the collection investigates the value surrounding materiality, production, craftsmanship, and industrialisation.

Fanatic is Cristina's most recent collection for her contemporary jewellery label Heart & Noble. The line is modular and 3D printed, fabricated out of various resins, polymers, and base metals. Inspired by the childhood staple, the Perler bead, the collection evokes early memories of play, crafts, and making.

CROMA is Cristina's third collection for her contemporary jewellery label, Heart & Noble. Laser-cut in acrylic, the entire line is an extruded view of her first capsule, the Cable Tie Collection. By turning her first collection on its head, offering another vantage, an alternative technology of production and material, the pieces provoke notions of value, perspective, and repetition, critical themes of Cristina's work.

Cable Tie is Cristina's first collection for her contemporary jewellery label, Heart & Noble. Grounded in the observation and representation of the utilitarian Cable Tie (as a design unit), the collection evokes cognitive dissonance, registering synonymously as familiar and unfamiliar. Each design, rooted in the beauty and banality of the quotidian, intricately elucidates the tension between craft and industry.
